Local knowledge for Takayama

Where to stay

Most hostels sit within a short walk of Takayama Station on the west side of the Miyagawa River, which puts you close to both the Sanmachi Suji preserved streets and the Miyagawa Asaichi morning market without needing any transport. A few cheaper options are tucked a bit further north near the Higashiyama temple walking course, quieter at night and still easy on foot.

Getting around

  • The Miyagawa Asaichi runs every morning along the river from around 7am. Get there before 8:30am and you'll have the pickle vendors and craft stalls mostly to yourself before tour groups arrive.
  • Book the Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go well before you arrive in Takayama. Seats sell out weeks in advance in October and November, and there is no realistic alternative route.
  • Sake breweries along Sanmachi Suji offer free or very cheap tastings. Look for a sugidama, a cedar ball hanging above the entrance, that's how you spot an active brewery.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest in January and February when the town is cold and quiet, and they fill up fast in mid-April around the Sanno Matsuri festival and again in mid-October during the Hachiman Matsuri, when prices climb and availability drops quickly.
