Casco Viejo is the default base for budget travelers, with hostels clustered around the Siete Calles grid and walking distance to the Guggenheim. Bilbao La Vieja, across the Nervión along Calle San Francisco, runs quieter and cheaper, about 10 minutes on foot from the main sights.
Getting around
- The Guggenheim offers free entry on Tuesday evenings (except in July and August). If your dates are flexible, build your visit around that.
- Pintxos bars on Calle Jardines and around Plaza Nueva price most pieces cheaply. Go at noon or 7pm when bars put out fresh rounds, not at 9pm when the selection is picked over.
