Where to stay

The entire town is a single strip along the beach, with hostels and surf camps clustered right on the sand or one block inland. Staying beachfront puts you steps from the waves and the sunset, while the few inland options offer slightly more shade and privacy at a modest discount.

Getting around

• Mompiche sits at the southern end of the Ensenada de Mompiche bay. Buses from Esmeraldas or Quito typically drop you in Muisne or La Mancha, so you will need a mototaxi or shared pickup for the final leg south. Agree on the fare before you get in.
• Cash is essential. The town is small and remote, with limited or unreliable ATM access. Bring enough US dollars in small bills to cover your entire stay, including meals, surf rentals, and transport.
• The black sand beach at Playa Negra (El Ostional) is a short boat ride away and famous for leatherback turtle nesting. If you go, hire a local guide through your hostel to ensure you follow conservation rules and do not disturb the nesting sites.

When to go

The dry season from December to May brings the best surf swells and sunny days, making it the busiest and most expensive time. The rainy season from June to November sees fewer tourists and lower prices, though heavy afternoon showers are common.
