Where to stay

The village is compact and car-free, with hostels clustered around the main square (Praça do Rosário) and the streets leading down to Primeira and Segunda Praias. Staying near the center keeps you within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the ferry dock; beds further up toward Terceira and Quarta Praias are quieter but require a longer walk or a donkey taxi ride back into town after dark.

Getting around

• There are no cars on the island, so everything is on foot or by bicycle. Donkeys are used for cargo transport and sometimes offer rides, but expect to walk between beaches and the village center.
• Bring enough cash for your entire stay. ATMs exist but are few and often run out of money, and many small vendors and pousadas do not accept cards.
• The direct catamaran from Salvador's Terminal Turístico Náutico is faster but can be rough; the cheaper alternative via ferry to Itaparica, then bus to Valença and a short boat ride, takes longer but is smoother and costs a fraction of the direct ticket.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season from February through August, when higher rainfall keeps visitor numbers lower. Prices spike from September through January during the drier, sunnier months, and especially around Brazilian holidays like Carnival and New Year's.
