Local knowledge for Santa Teresa
Where to stay
One long dirt road runs parallel to the beach and everything is described by where it sits on it. Playa Carmen at the south end has the bus stop and the cheapest beds, Santa Teresa proper is the busy middle stretch, and Manzanillo at the north end is quieter with less walking distance to dinner.
Getting around
- Getting here is a bus plus the Puntarenas-Paquera ferry plus another bus, and the whole thing eats a day. The direct shuttles cost several times more but turn it into a manageable half-day.
- This is one of the most expensive beach towns in Costa Rica. Cooking at your hostel and shopping at the supermarkets rather than the beachfront restaurants makes the difference between a cheap week and a blown budget.
- The road is dust in dry season and mud in green season, and quad taxis are the normal way to move at night. Factor those rides in if you book a place at the far north end.
When to go
Cheapest from May through early December, the green season, with September and October the quietest and wettest. Rates roughly double for the late-December to April dry season, and Christmas, New Year, and Semana Santa are the peak of the peak.
