Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster tightly around the Plaza San Martín and the adjacent pedestrian streets, putting you within walking distance of the main restaurants, craft shops, and the bus terminal. A few quieter options sit slightly uphill toward the church, offering better views of the valley and the Sierra del Aconquija, but requiring a short walk or mototaxi ride back to the center after dark.

Getting around

• Tafí del Valle is the standard gateway to the Calchaquí Valleys. Day trips to Purmamarca, Quebrada de las Conchas, and Salta are easily arranged through local agencies or by joining shared colectivos from the terminal, saving you the hassle of renting a car for a few days.
• The altitude is significant at over 1,700 meters, and the sun is intense. Bring strong sunscreen and a hat for daytime hikes, but pack a warm jacket for the evenings, which drop sharply in temperature even during summer months.
• Bring cash in Argentine pesos. While some larger hotels and restaurants in town accept cards, smaller comedores, local markets, and mototaxi drivers often do not, and ATM availability can be unreliable outside the main banking hours.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and quietest during the winter months of June through August, when cold fronts bring frost and occasional snow to the higher peaks, though days remain sunny. Prices peak during the Argentine summer holidays (December through February) and Semana Santa, when domestic tourists flock to the valley for the mild weather and outdoor activities.
