Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster on the streets a few blocks inland from the main beach road along Playa Tamarindo, close enough to walk to the water but priced well below the beachfront. The south end near Playa Langosta tends to be quieter and a bit cheaper than the center of town.

Getting around

  • Take the small boat across the Tamarindo estuary to reach Playa Grande. The crossing costs next to nothing, the beach is long and far less crowded, and it sits inside Las Baulas National Marine Park.
  • Skip the restaurants on the main beach strip and eat at the sodas one or two blocks inland. A casado with rice, beans, protein, and salad is cheap. The same meal on the waterfront costs two to three times as much.
  • Fly into Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport (LIR) rather than San José. The shuttle to Tamarindo takes around an hour from Liberia. From San José it is three to four hours of winding mountain roads.

When to go

Rates are lowest from May through November, with September and October the cheapest months of all. December through April is dry season and fills hostels fast, especially around Christmas week and Semana Santa.
