Where to stay

Most budget travelers stay on Cascajal Island, the main urban hub, concentrating along Calle 1 near the central park for safety and access to restaurants. A few cheaper options sit near the bus station, but Calle 1 keeps you closer to the Muelle Turístico for boat departures and within walking distance of the town's main commercial activity.

Getting around

• Buses to Cali run frequently and take about four hours, costing a fraction of domestic flights from Gerardo Tobar López Airport. Direct buses to Bogotá also leave twice daily, making overland travel the standard budget option despite the long journey.
• Use Buenaventura as a launchpad for the Pacific coast rather than a destination itself. Fast boats (lanchas) depart from the Muelle Turístico for nearby beach towns like Juanchaco and Ladrilleros, which offer better infrastructure for relaxation and whale watching.
• Bring cash and expect heavy rain. The city is one of the wettest in the world, so waterproof gear is essential. While ATMs exist, carrying enough pesos for your stay and boat transfers is wise given the remote nature of the region and limited card acceptance.

When to go

Hostels and boats are busiest and most expensive from July through October due to the humpback whale migration season, which attracts tourists to nearby Juanchaco and Ladrilleros. The rest of the year is quieter and cheaper, though rainfall is consistently high year-round, making the 'dry' months only slightly less wet.
