Where to stay

Budget beds cluster in the compact downtown grid near the Plaza de la Libertad and the Malecón, the seafront promenade along Calle 1ra. Staying here keeps you within walking distance of the bus terminal, the colonial churches, and the pier where the Virgen del Rosario statue stands. The area is flat and walkable, though mototaxis are restricted from the historic center, so you will need a car taxi for trips to the airport or the terminal.

Getting around

• Riohacha is the gateway to the La Guajira desert and Wayuu culture. Day trips to Los Flamencos sanctuary for pink flamingos or to nearby rancherías to see traditional weaving are easily arranged through agencies downtown, often at a fraction of the cost of packages booked in Santa Marta.
• The heat is intense and the sun is unforgiving. The city sits in a rain shadow, making it arid and hot year-round. Carry more water than you think you need, wear a hat, and avoid midday sun exposure when exploring the beach or the desert outskirts.
• Buses run frequently from Santa Marta (about two and a half hours) and Barranquilla. Flying into Santa Marta and taking the bus is often significantly cheaper than flying directly into Riohacha's Almirante Padilla Airport, especially for last-minute bookings.

When to go

Prices are lowest during the rainy season from October through November, when humidity spikes and visitor numbers drop. The dry season from December through April is the busiest and most expensive period, coinciding with Colombian holidays and the peak time for desert tourism and beach visits.
