Where to stay

Most budget hostels sit within a few blocks of Parque La Libertad, the central plaza, which puts you close to the Fonce River and a short walk from Parque El Gallineral. Staying near the plaza means you can arrange every rafting, caving, or paragliding operator on foot.

Getting around

• Do the Barichara day trip: buses leave from San Gil's main terminal for a cheap fare each way, and you can walk the old Camino Real stone path from Barichara down to Güane before catching a return bus.
• Book adventure activities one day in advance, not weeks out. Rain affects river levels constantly, and local operators will give you a straight answer about whether conditions are actually good that morning.
• Eat lunch at the Galería Mercado, the covered market near the center, where set-menu lunches (soup, main, juice) run very cheaply. Restaurant prices double the moment you sit anywhere with a view of the river.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest in April-May and September-October when rain keeps some travelers away; they fill fast and prices climb during Semana Santa, the December-January break, and the June-July Colombian school holiday.
