Local knowledge for Medellin

Where to stay

El Poblado, around Parque Lleras and Calle 10, is where most hostels are clustered and where you'll find the densest concentration of other travelers. Laureles, especially along Carrera 70, runs noticeably cheaper and has a more residential feel worth considering for stays longer than a night or two.

Getting around

  • Load a Civica card at any Metro station. A single fare covers the Metro, Metrocable, and Metroplús buses, so the cable car up to Santo Domingo Savio or Parque Arví effectively costs nothing extra within the transfer window.
  • Grocery shopping in El Poblado (Carulla on Avenida El Poblado, the Éxito nearby) is tourist-priced. Walk or Metro one stop to Estadio or Laureles for the same items at Colombian prices.
  • Skip street taxis for anything over a few blocks. Use InDriver or Cabify, where the fare is set before you get in. Street cabs to/from El Poblado routinely quote two to three times the metered rate to anyone who looks like a visitor.

When to go

December and January are the most expensive months, with holiday travelers filling the city, and the Feria de las Flores in early August causes another spike. May and September offer the lowest hostel rates.
