Local knowledge for Cusco
Where to stay
Budget travelers cluster in two spots: San Blas, the hillside barrio above Plaza de Armas, has the densest hostel options along Cuesta San Blas and Tandapata, and is walkable to everything worth seeing. The blocks around Mercado San Pedro are cheaper and more local, though the climb back uphill at 3,400m will humble you fast.
Getting around
- Book Machu Picchu entry weeks ahead at the official government portal. Slots sell out, especially the Huayna Picchu add-on, and there is no workaround at the gate.
- Eat lunch at Mercado San Pedro, a block from the San Pedro rail station. A full plate with juice runs just a few soles and the stalls toward the back are noticeably cleaner than the tourist-facing ones up front.
- Skip the tourist shuttle from Plaza de Armas. Shared colectivos to Pisac and Chinchero leave from Calle Puputi and cost a fraction of the price for the same ride.
When to go
Hostels are easiest to book and cheapest November through April during the rainy season, while June fills up hard around the 24th for Inti Raymi at Sacsayhuaman, and July through August stays packed with the post-solstice crowd.
