Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster tightly around the Plaza de Armas (Plaza Constitución) and the grid of streets on the right bank of the Vilcanota River. Staying here keeps you walking distance from the bus stands and the market, though Sunday mornings bring heavy crowds and noise from the famous artisan market that spills into the town center.

Getting around

• The Inca ruins sit high on the ridge above town and require a steep climb or a short taxi ride up. Go early in the morning to beat the tour buses from Cusco, and carry cash for the entrance fee, as card payments are not always reliable at the gate.
• Pisac sits at 2,972 meters, which is significantly lower than Cusco. It is an ideal first stop after flying into the region to acclimatize before heading to higher altitudes or Machu Picchu, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
• Local buses and colectivos run frequently between Pisac and Cusco, costing a fraction of a private transfer. The ride takes roughly an hour, and services are most frequent during the day, so plan your departure to avoid waiting for the last bus in the late afternoon.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and quietest during the rainy season from November to March, though February brings heavy downpours that can make the ruins slippery. Prices spike and beds fill fast from June to August, the dry season peak, and on Sundays when the market draws domestic and international crowds.
