Local knowledge for Nazca

Where to stay

Most budget hostels cluster within a few blocks of Plaza de Armas along Jr. Lima and Calle Bolognesi. Staying close to the plaza keeps you walking distance from the bus companies and tour operators, so you're not paying for taxis at 5am when flights over the lines depart.

Getting around

  • The roadside Mirador Natural on the Panamericana Sur (about 20km from town) costs around S/2 and lets you see the Hands and Tree figures from ground level. Worth doing even if you're also booking a flight.
  • Book your overflight directly at Aeródromo Maria Reiche rather than through hostel staff. Prices are set by the operators and are the same at the airfield. You cut out the middleman commission.
  • Cruz del Sur and Oltursa buses from Lima drop you on Calle Lima, a short walk from most hostels. The cheaper PeruBus gets you there too but takes a longer route. Book a bus seat with baggage included or you'll pay extra at the terminal.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest November through March when foreign tourism slows and Peruvian school is in session. July fills up fast with domestic travelers on winter break and overlanders heading south on the Panamericana.
