Where to stay

Everything is within a few blocks of the malecon, the seafront road with the reed boats stacked along it. The southern end near the pier has most of the hostels and the cheapest ceviche; the northern stretch toward the surf breaks is quieter and a short walk from the centre.

Getting around

• Chan Chan and the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna are both easy independent day trips by combi from the main road, at a fraction of a tour's price. Chan Chan is close enough to reach by bike.
• The water is cold year-round because of the Humboldt current, and every surf school rents wetsuits. Do not judge the surf conditions by the air temperature.
• Huanchaco is where travellers actually sleep for the Trujillo area, and combis to the city run constantly for pocket change, so there is no reason to book a bed in Trujillo itself.

When to go

Cheapest from April through November, when the coast is cooler and often overcast. December through March is the Peruvian summer, when domestic holidaymakers fill the beach towns and prices are at their highest, especially around New Year.
