Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster in the Centro Histórico, the UNESCO-listed colonial core with its azulejo-tiled buildings and cobblestone streets. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the waterfront, the main markets, and the bus routes heading out to the islands. The modern area around Lagoa da Jansen has urban beaches and upscale shopping, but it is further from the historic sights and the main transport hubs.

Getting around

• São Luís is the primary gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Buses and tours to the park depart from the city's bus terminal, so staying near the center saves you a long ride to the station before an early morning departure.
• The city sits on São Luís Island in the Baía de São Marcos. Ferries to nearby islands like Ilha do Guajará and Ilha do Matões are a cheap and easy way to spend a day, with departures usually from the waterfront near the historic center.
• Cash is king for small purchases and local transport. While cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants, smaller eateries, street vendors, and ferry tickets often require Brazilian reais in cash.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season from February to June, when heavy rains can make some areas muddy and less appealing. Prices peak during the Bumba meu boi festival in June and July, and during the dry season from July to December when the weather is best for visiting the Lençóis Maranhenses.
