Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster in the Centro Bolívar district, where the historic architecture, main market, and most hostels sit within walking distance of each other. The adjacent Manga neighborhood, just across the Canal del Dique, offers a quieter, leafier alternative with colonial mansions and a few budget spots, though it requires a short taxi or bus ride to reach the city center's main attractions.

Getting around

• The city's main attraction is the Carnaval de Barranquilla, a UNESCO-recognized festival held in the four days before Ash Wednesday. Book months in advance if you plan to stay during this period, as prices spike and beds vanish quickly.
• Use the local bus network or 'colectivos' (shared vans) to get around; they are significantly cheaper than taxis. The bus terminal is located on the outskirts, so factor in extra time and a small fare to reach the center from there.
• Bring cash for smaller vendors and transport. While cards are accepted in larger establishments, many local eateries, street vendors, and smaller hostels prefer or only accept Colombian pesos in cash.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and easiest to book during the rainy season, typically from April to May and October to November, when tourist numbers dip. Prices and occupancy peak during the Carnival period in February or March, as well as during the December-January holiday stretch when domestic travel surges.
