Where to stay

Calabazo is a small crossroads settlement in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta foothills, part of the Santa Marta municipality in Magdalena department, at the junction where the road climbs to Minca. Accommodation is sparse, mostly small family-run guesthouses along the main road and near the junction itself, and most travelers pass through rather than stay, using it as a stop on the way up to Minca or back down to Santa Marta.

Getting around

• Calabazo's role is as the gateway junction for Minca, not a destination in itself. Shared jeeps and mototaxis wait at the crossroads to carry you up the mountain to Minca's coffee and cacao farms and waterfalls.
• Cash is essential in this region. ATMs are scarce or non-existent in small towns like Calabazo, so withdraw enough pesos in Santa Marta before heading up into the mountains.
• The junction itself is hot and humid, but the climate cools noticeably as the road climbs toward Minca, so pack layers if you are continuing uphill rather than dressing for the coast.

When to go

Prices are generally lower during the rainy season, which typically runs from April to June and October to November. The busiest and most expensive periods are during the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as the Semana Santa (Holy Week) break, when domestic tourism surges.
