Where to stay

Dibulla is a small, off-the-beaten-track village on the Caribbean coast, nestled between the sea and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Accommodation is sparse and basic, with most budget options clustered near the main road or close to the beach access points. Staying in town keeps you within walking distance of the few local eateries and the river mouth, while avoiding the need for mototaxis after dark.

Getting around

• Reach Dibulla from Santa Marta by taking a bus toward Riohacha and asking the driver to drop you at the town entrance, then take a shared taxi or mototaxi the short distance into the village. Buses from the Santa Marta terminal or the public market are the most reliable way in.
• Bring enough cash for your entire stay. ATMs are non-existent in Dibulla, and the nearest banking facilities are in Santa Marta or Riohacha. Even small vendors and family-run rooms will likely only accept Colombian pesos.
• The Dibulla River and nearby Maziruma beach are the main draws. The river offers swimming holes and a break from the coastal heat, while the beach remains largely undeveloped and quiet compared to the tourist-heavy stretches further west toward Palomino.

When to go

The dry season from December to April is the busiest and most expensive time, as visitors flock to the Caribbean coast for reliable sunshine. The rainy months, particularly from May to November, offer the lowest rates and fewest crowds, though afternoon showers are common and some rural roads may become difficult to navigate.
