Where to stay

Hostels cluster in the eastern part of the village along Highway 90, where the bigger center sits with supermarkets, bakeries, and street food. Staying here keeps you close to the mototaxi drivers and the regional bus route. The smaller western center is quieter but further from the main transport links and dining options.

Getting around

• Bring cash before you arrive. There are no ATMs in Guachaca or for roughly 100km along the coast between Santa Marta and Mingueo, though some places may allow credit card withdrawals for a steep fee.
• The Río Guachaca is the main attraction. From May to November, water levels are high enough to float down the river to the Caribbean Sea without rapids. Bring insect repellent and go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the intense midday sun reflecting off the water.
• Regional buses run frequently between Santa Marta and Palomino via Guachaca until around 18:00. You can flag them down anywhere along the route, but mototaxi fares within the village rise significantly after dark, so plan your evening movements accordingly.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and easiest to book during the rainy season from December through April, when river levels are too low for floating. The dry months from May to November see higher visitor numbers for river activities, with rates climbing around Colombian school holidays and Semana Santa.
