Where to stay
Huacachina is one loop road, Avenida Perotti, circling the lagoon. Every hostel is on it, but rooms on the south side sit closer to the dunes and get afternoon shade, which matters when temperatures hit 35C.
Getting around
- Book your dune buggy and sandboarding tour through your hostel, not the touts at the lagoon entrance. Hostel-booked tours run cheaper and there's someone to complain to if the driver skips stops.
- Eat in Ica city rather than at the oasis. A mototaxi there costs a few soles and a menu del dia at one of the restaurants near the Mercado Central runs a third of what the lagoon-side spots charge.
- The lagoon is not clean enough to swim in, whatever photos online suggest. Pack sandals you don't mind getting sandy and spend your water time at the hostel pool if it has one.
