Local knowledge for Mazunte
Where to stay
The village is two main streets meeting near the beach, and nearly all hostels are within a few minutes of the sand. The cheaper beds sit back from the beach on the road in and up the hill toward Punta Cometa, which is a steep walk with a pack but the quietest part of town.
Getting around
- Walk out to Punta Cometa for sunset. It is a twenty-minute path from the village, it is free, and it is the one thing everyone here does.
- The undertow on this stretch of coast is serious and Mazunte's beach has no lifeguards. Ask locally which end is safe on the day rather than assuming, and treat the neighbouring beaches the same way.
- ATMs here are unreliable and charge heavily when they work. Bring cash from Puerto Escondido or Huatulco, since plenty of places do not take cards at all.
When to go
Cheapest from May through November, with September and October the wettest and quietest. The late-December to March stretch is the dry, busy season, and Christmas, New Year, and Semana Santa are the weeks that sell out first and cost the most.
