Local knowledge for Mexico City
Where to stay
Roma Norte and Condesa put you walking distance from Parque México and the Álvaro Obregón restaurant strip, with Metro Line 1 at Insurgentes a few blocks away. Centro Histórico hostels are cheaper and drop you two blocks from the Zócalo, but keep your bag zipped on the Metro after dark.
Getting around
- Get a tarjeta de transporte rechargeable card at any Metro station. A single ride costs a few pesos, and Line 1 runs directly from Roma to Centro in under 15 minutes.
- For lunch, head to Mercado de Medellín in Colonia Roma. A full comida corrida with soup, main, and agua fresca runs very cheaply. The sit-down spots on Álvaro Obregón charge three times that for the same food.
- Avoid booking last-minute around Semana Santa and the first week of November. Día de Muertos draws big crowds to Mixquic and the city itself, and decent Roma or Condesa beds sell out weeks ahead.
When to go
June through August brings daily afternoon rain but also the lowest hostel rates. Prices spike hardest in late March or April for Semana Santa and again the first week of November.
