Local knowledge for Tulum
Where to stay
Nearly all the hostels sit in Tulum Pueblo, the inland town center, along or just off Avenida Tulum. The beach zone (Zona Hotelera) is a 10 to 15 minute bike ride away, but prices there are a completely different category.
Getting around
- Take colectivos instead of taxis. The shared vans departing near the ADO bus terminal in the pueblo connect you to the beach, Cobá, and Playa del Carmen for a fraction of what a taxi charges, and they run frequently throughout the day.
- Gran Cenote, a few kilometers out of town on the road toward Cobá, is one of the clearest swimming spots near Tulum and considerably less crowded than the cenotes marketed directly from the beach strip.
- Eat on Avenida Tulum in the pueblo rather than anywhere near the beach clubs. The same fish tacos cost two to three times more once you cross into the Zona Hotelera.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest in September and October when hurricane season keeps crowds thin, and they fill up fast from mid-December through March, with Semana Santa in April being the tightest stretch of all.
