Local knowledge for Guadalajara
Where to stay
Most hostels worth staying in sit in Colonia Americana, a few blocks from Avenida Chapultepec, where you can walk to food, nightlife, and the Tren Ligero without a taxi. Centro Histórico is cheaper per night but louder, and better used as a daytime destination around Plaza Tapatía than a base.
Getting around
- The Tren Ligero light rail connects Centro to Tlaquepaque for next to nothing. Line 3 runs the route; use it instead of taxis.
- Tortas ahogadas at Mercado Libertad (San Juan de Dios) run very cheap. The same sandwich near Avenida Chapultepec costs two to three times more.
- If you're arriving in late October or November, book at least three weeks out. Día de Muertos events fill the city and hostels in Colonia Americana go first.
When to go
February and March are the cheapest months with easy availability; October through mid-November fills up fast and rates climb noticeably.
