Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster tightly in the Centro Histórico, a UNESCO World Heritage zone where the pink sandstone facades and narrow streets keep everything walkable. Most hostels sit within a few blocks of the cathedral and the main plaza, putting you steps from museums, markets, and the best street food. Staying here avoids the need for taxis, though the historic center can get noisy on weekends and the constant honking on main avenues means requesting a room facing an interior courtyard.

Getting around

• The modern bus terminal is on the northwest periphery, a significant distance from the center. Buy a taxi ticket from the official kiosk inside the station before heading out to avoid being overcharged for the ride downtown.
• Morelia is a university town with a vibrant student culture, so the center is generally safe and lively late into the night. However, carry cash for smaller vendors and markets, as foreign cards are not widely accepted at budget stalls.
• Use Morelia as a base for day trips to the nearby Purépecha communities around Lake Pátzcuaro and the island of Janitzio. Buses run frequently from the main terminal, and independent travel costs a fraction of organized tour packages.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season from June through September, when afternoon showers keep visitor numbers lower. Prices spike and beds fill quickly during the Day of the Dead celebrations in late October and early November, as well as during the December holiday stretch and Semana Santa.
