Getting around

• Neiva is the primary gateway to the Tatacoa Desert. Most travelers use it as a base for a day trip or overnight stay in Villavieja, so book your transport to the desert early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
• The Malecón del Río Magdalena is the best place to cool off in the evening. It features a long riverwalk with views of the steamy Magdalena River, an observation deck, and plenty of local kiosks selling coffee and snacks.
• Try the local specialties, particularly the Asado Huilense (beef roast) and Biscocho de Achira (bread made from achira root). These are staples of the Huila region and are widely available at local comedores and restaurants in the center.

When to go

Hostels are generally cheapest during the rainy season from April to May and October to November, when visitor numbers drop. Prices rise during the dry season (December to March) and around the Fiesta de San Pedro in late June and early July, which draws crowds for folklore festivals.
