Where to stay

Almost every budget hostel in Salento sits within a block of Calle Real (Carrera 6) or the Plaza de Bolívar. The town is small enough that location barely matters for price, but staying near the plaza puts you steps from the shared Willys jeeps that head out to Valle de Cocora each morning.

Getting around

• Skip any packaged 'Cocora Valley tour' and take the shared Willys jeep from the main plaza instead. It costs a few thousand pesos each way and drops you at the same trailhead.
• Coffee farm visits organized directly at the farm gate are almost always cheaper than the ones sold through hostels. Walk or catch a local jeep toward the rural roads outside town and look for finca signs.
• Weekends draw big crowds from Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. If you arrive Friday or Saturday without a reservation, expect higher prices and slim pickings. Mid-week arrivals have real leverage.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest in May and in September through early October. They fill fast and prices climb during December, January, Semana Santa, and any long Colombian public-holiday weekend.
