Where to stay

Budget beds cluster tightly around the Plaza de la Independencia and the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, where the town's colonial core is most walkable. A handful of fincas and eco-lodges sit just outside town near the rock formations, which is scenic but means you need a taxi or a hike back for evening meals.

Getting around

• Buses depart from Bogota's Terminal del Norte for a roughly one-hour ride. It is a frequent route, so you do not need to book far in advance, and it costs a fraction of a private transfer.
• The town is a hub for rock climbing and trekking to the Suesca Monoliths. Agencies near the plaza offer guided routes, but you can also walk to the base of the rocks from town if you are experienced and have the right gear.
• Bring cash for small purchases. While the main plaza has some services, the rural fincas and local vendors near the climbing areas often do not accept cards, and ATMs can be unreliable in the afternoon.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest on weekdays and during the rainy season (April-May and October-November), when fewer Bogotanos visit for weekend trips. Prices spike on weekends and during Colombian school holidays in July and December-January, as the town is a popular short escape from the capital.
