Where to stay

The village is compact and strung along Carrera 1, the main road that hugs the bay. Most hostels cluster on the blocks immediately behind the beach or on the steep side streets cutting up toward the Mirador viewpoint. Staying near the water keeps you close to the boat departures and diving schools, while the upper streets offer cooler air and sunset views but require a steep walk back down to the action.

Getting around

• Take the frequent collectivos from Santa Marta's Carrera 5 instead of a taxi. The shared minibus ride takes about fifteen minutes and costs a fraction of what a private cab charges, especially since taxi drivers often quote higher prices to foreigners.
• Use Taganga as your base for Tayrona National Park's Cabo San Juan beach. The daily boat service departs from the Taganga pier in the morning and returns in the afternoon, offering a faster and often cheaper alternative to hiking in from the park's main entrances.
• Exercise standard caution after dark. Stick to the well-lit main street and avoid the narrow, unlit stairways that cut down to the beach at night. Ask your hostel staff which specific blocks to avoid, as safety can vary block by block.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and quietest during the rainy season from June through November, when humidity is high and afternoon showers are common. Prices spike and beds fill up during the dry season (December through March) and especially around the December-January holiday stretch, when domestic tourists flock to the coast.
