Where to stay

The main town is compact and walkable, with the densest cluster of budget beds sitting within a few blocks of the ferry terminal and the central plaza. Staying here keeps you close to the cheap tacos, the bus stops, and the main drag of shops. The western side near the ferry is the busiest, while the eastern end toward Punta Sur is quieter but requires a scooter or golf cart to get back to town after dark.

Getting around

• Rent a golf cart or scooter to explore the island. The main roads run end-to-end, but the Caribbean side has strong gusts of wind that can catch you off guard, and there are many topes (speed bumps) that can jar you if you are not careful.
• Take the ferry from Puerto Juarez rather than the Hotel Zone ports. It is used by locals, tends to be more reliable, and is a fraction of the price of the touristy departures from Playa Caracol or Playa Tortugas.
• Bring cash for small purchases and scooter rentals. While larger hotels and tour operators may take cards, the local comedores, street vendors, and rental shops often prefer pesos, and ATMs can run out of cash during peak weeks.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and easiest to book during the summer months (mid-May through September), when temperatures are sweltering and the hurricane risk keeps visitor numbers lower. Rates climb significantly during the winter months (December through April), when the weather is cooler and domestic and international tourists fill the island.
