Where to stay

Budget beds cluster in the Centro (Zona Comercial), where the cathedral and markets sit, and along the Malecón waterfront promenade. Staying in Centro keeps you walking distance from buses, taxis, and cheap taquerías, while the Malecón puts you steps from the water and the sunset crowds. The Esterito neighborhood further east has a few hostels near the beach but is quieter and a short taxi ride from the action.

Getting around

• Swimming with whale sharks is the main draw, and tours depart from the Malecón or nearby piers. Book with a reputable operator that follows ethical guidelines, and go during the season (typically November through April, peaking December to March) when the sharks are present.
• Taxis and Uber are both available and reasonably priced for short trips, but always agree on the fare before getting in, especially with taxis, to avoid per-person pricing surprises. The airport is a fair distance from downtown, so arrange your transfer in advance or budget for a shared van.
• Balandra Beach and the nearby Tecolote Beach are stunning day trips, but Balandra has been closed intermittently for conservation. Check current access before heading out, and go early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat. A taxi or rental car is needed to reach them.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest from May through October, when the heat drives down visitor numbers and whale shark tours are the primary draw. Prices spike from November through April, the dry and mild winter season, when whale watching and general tourism peak, especially around Christmas and New Year.
