Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster tightly around the main plaza and along Avenida 5 de Mayo, the pedestrian-friendly artery that runs through the historic center. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the pulquerías, the weekend tianguis market, and the trailhead for El Tepozteco. The town is compact and walkable, so there is little reason to stay further out unless you specifically want a quiet retreat away from the evening crowds.

Getting around

• Take the bus from Mexico City's Tasqueña station via Pullman de Morelos or OCC rather than a private transfer. The ride takes about an hour and costs a fraction of what a taxi quotes, with departures every 30 minutes.
• Start the hike up El Tepozteco early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. The climb involves roughly 400 meters of stairs and steep steps, so bring water and wear proper shoes.
• Visit on a Saturday to experience the tianguis, the large traditional market that fills the streets with local food, crafts, and pulque. It is the most vibrant time to be in town, but also the busiest for accommodation.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and easiest to book during the rainy season from June through September, when afternoon showers keep visitor numbers lower. Prices spike and beds fill fast on weekends, during Semana Santa, and in the dry winter months of December through February when Mexico City residents escape to the mountains.
