Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster around the Embarcadero Municipal, the town waterfront where the main plaza, restaurants, and tour boats converge. Staying here keeps you within walking distance of the bus terminal and the lake's main activities. Rooms further inland or up the hillsides are quieter but require taxis for evening errands.

Getting around

• Taxis are the primary way to get around town, as public transit is limited. Fares for short trips within the center are modest, but always agree on the price before getting in, especially for trips to outlying villages or parks.
• Water taxis operate across Lake Avándaro and are a practical, scenic way to reach distant beaches or marinas that are otherwise a long drive around the shoreline. They are significantly cheaper than hiring a private boat or taxi for the same route.
• The town is a major weekend retreat for Mexico City's affluent residents. Expect crowds, higher prices, and fully booked accommodations on Fridays and Saturdays. Weekdays are far quieter and offer better rates.

When to go

Hostels and hotels are most expensive during weekends, especially in the dry season from November to April when weather is ideal for lake activities. Prices spike around major Mexican holidays and Semana Santa. The rainy season (June to September) offers the lowest rates, though afternoon storms can disrupt outdoor plans.
